Tilarán is a small city in the Guanacaste province, perched at around 550 metres above sea level in the Tilarán mountain range. It sits at the western end of Lake Arenal, roughly 22 kilometres from Nuevo Arenal, and serves as the main commercial and administrative centre for the surrounding lake region.
The city has a pleasant, well-kept central square and a relaxed pace of life that reflects its largely agricultural surroundings. It is a working town rather than a tourist destination, which gives it an authenticity that many visitors find refreshing after the more developed areas around La Fortuna. Local markets, independent shops, and family-run restaurants are all part of the day-to-day fabric here.
Tilarán's elevated position keeps temperatures comfortable year-round, typically sitting between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius. The area is popular with windsurfers heading to Lake Arenal and with travellers passing through between Guanacaste and the Arenal zone. It connects well by road to Liberia, San José, and the Pacific coast, making it a useful hub for wider exploration.
