Tucked into the forested slopes below Arenal Volcano, El Castillo is one of Costa Rica's best-kept secrets. Small, unhurried, and genuinely off the beaten track, this little community sits just 16 kilometres from La Fortuna but feels a world away from the tourist bustle. The road in is winding and narrow, which keeps the crowds thin and the atmosphere authentic.
El Castillo is a brilliant base for wildlife watching. The surrounding cloud forest is rich with toucans, sloths, and howler monkeys, and the Arenal EcoZoo and Butterfly Conservatory are both worth a morning of your time. From here you also get some of the most dramatic views of Arenal Volcano available anywhere in the region, particularly at dawn before the clouds roll in.
Accommodation tends to be small-scale: family-run guesthouses, eco-lodges, and boutique rentals with forest or lake views. It is the kind of place where you arrive planning to stay two nights and leave wishing you had booked a week.
